Collins believed players have a short attention span, and were, perhaps, "less likely [to be] interested in reading the rules of the game before playing." "I'm not just talking about younger players now, but anybody. We've been working to adapt to that, the changing expectations of the new gamer.""Lowell Francishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02359280169506945906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764158821384594980.post-64497909979273336332011-12-28T09:57:01.112-05:002011-12-28T09:57:01.112-05:00Great article. As someone who's been playing ...Great article. As someone who's been playing the same 4 or so RPG's since high school 11 years ago, I'm just now discovering that there really is a far greater world out there than the staples I'm used to.
I got into Dark Heresy a few years ago, and just got the Mouse Guard RPG for Christmas. I've been listening to Dresden Files themed podcasts, and hearing more about FATE. There are endless variations out there, and it's a great time to be a gamer. I think the tabletop experience really does give you more than any MMORPG could; it's a chance to meet new friends in real life, instead of just over VOIP through a computer screen. Some game nights are great, and others end up filled with frustration. But every one gives you a story to tell.M Althauserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16738624321098122758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764158821384594980.post-61197242266497858382011-12-27T19:43:14.311-05:002011-12-27T19:43:14.311-05:00@Kaiju: MMORPGs have got the formula down and they...@Kaiju: MMORPGs have got the formula down and they have resources to keep the old gal gussied up.

But in most ways, MMORPGs have become incredibly narrow--they are about what the profitable X million likes, all of it pared down to measurable, served up continuously in little packets and enforced by constant reminders of what the over-achievers have (and that you too could presumably have).

It's a model of consumer economy with RPG trappings. (And I am as susceptible to it as anyone-which annoys the hell out of me.) Let's face it, no tabletop is going to dole out the reinforcement as systematically and patiently as those great big old server farms.

So if there's anything to be learned from RPGs, it might be methods for offering the players the illusion of greater control--things like the point-spend mechanic in Gumshoe.

I'd be interested in more intricate relation mapping with bonuses and disadvantages--something that goes beyond the KPI-style scoring of factions or alignment that now serves as 'morality meters' in some games.

But mostly, I don't think there's all that much. Most genres (other than the dungeon slog) operate on dramatic theory--beginning, middle, end, rising stakes, falling fortunes, dark night of the soul, etc. Not too many people WANT to ride that roller coaster--a steady stream of tasty pellets is far nicer.

Like situational comedies, MMORPGs are about preventing the END from occurring--or even allowing any real changes alter the formula.

Lord knows, there's no money in the RP stuff in a MMORPG--that'd be hard to sustain since it takes consensus and 'weird' things like that are even more vigilantly shunned in geek borderlands where the crew can pretend they're cool. Heh--it's a hard sell in the RPG community, who, as ADD Grognard points out, mainly want to revisit the well.

I'm spoiled. I have a steady schedule of good games and GMs who are always thinking and always looking for ways to make the experience more enjoyable. I have a gaming circle that tries new things and is honest and articulate about their reservations.

I am happily ensconced among the fortunate 1% in the gaming world.

I can afford to risk my table time on something new and exotic...I'm not starving.Auzumelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09745556063535219123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764158821384594980.post-11811709696060716532011-12-27T15:20:26.991-05:002011-12-27T15:20:26.991-05:00Interesting analysis. Yo...Interesting analysis. Thanks for sharing this!

You briefly mentioned some shortcomings of MMORPGs compared to pen-and-paper RPGs. What would you say are areas that MMORPGs could learn from tabletop play?Kaijuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06184830369889881159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764158821384594980.post-32072309370041306622011-12-27T13:16:04.110-05:002011-12-27T13:16:04.110-05:00See, this is how I approached things when I came b...See, this is how I approached things when I came back into gaming a few years back.

I was inspired by something so cutting edge, imo, that it literally brought me back to a hobby I thought I had moved completely away from.

My first gaming blog covered this new concept...and it sits as a testament that people don't want new. The blog has exactly 2 followers - my wife and the guy who authored the game that brought me back.

I learned a valuable lesson: People don't really want new. They say they do, they rally around new but in the end they really want that same old comfortable car they have been driving for years with a new paint job.

Understand, this is not a value judgment but an observation.

Just like this list of winners from Diehard GameFAN’s 2011 Tabletop Gaming Awards:

http://diehardgamefan.com/2011/12/26/diehard-gamefans-2011-tabletop-gaming-awards/

Most of these are great items-but they do just have a fresh coat of paint. And the man who just picked up one of those awards, Mr. James Raggi, probably said it best with one of his posts awhile back:

'F*** Originality.'

http://lotfp.blogspot.com/2011/01/on-playtesting-lovecraft-releases.html

I know the man is a real room divider but his product sells and he wins awards.

My burst of originality is sitting there, withering away at the bottom of the blog garden, surrounded by weeds that a couple of people wonder what happened to it.

Just my 2...xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17814063435676111475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764158821384594980.post-70425765111022641132011-12-27T13:04:43.074-05:002011-12-27T13:04:43.074-05:00This. This is also why i'm dying to play again. I only know of one group of friends who play, and they haven't asked me to be a part of their group. I suspect it's because of my age, unfortunately. I'm too 'old school' or something. There's a roleplaying revival going on, and i'm missing out :(Zidders Roofurryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14718799079823863238noreply@blogger.com
